This UNC-Chapel Hill project situates the SOM-designed Genome Science Building on the Bell Tower Campus near Kenan Stadium. The LEED Gold, 5-level, 200,000 SF building includes a greenroof and greenhouse. The greenroof is approximately 8,000 SF, consisting of adapted, drought tolerant plants in an extensive ecosystem. The greenroof helps decrease stormwater runoff from the building, reduces heat island effect of the site and provides an educational and aesthetic component for students and faculty. The plaza level of the building incorporates an arrangement of bald cypress, merging the hardscape with the landscape.

The eight-acre campus site incorporates a large tiered green open space (formerly surface parking lots and service drive) adjacent to the Stadium. The site design provides increased pedestrian connectivity throughout the project and an extensive planting design that uses native and adapted plants. ColeJenest & Stone was the Landscape Architect of Record for the project, working with Chicago-based Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects, LLC.
