UNC Chapel Hill - The Pit Area Walkway Improvements Update

Improvements at The Pit at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill are taking shape with input from students on campus. The project calls for the design and construction of sidewalk improvements to the sunken courtyard which serves as a popular gathering place for students. However, the area is plagued by aging pavement and landscape that cause tripping hazards and ponding during rainfall. The new design will relocate declining trees, allow for better pedestrian circulation and re-lay pavers to provide a safer walking surface.

Construction documents for Phase 1 will be complete in October 2015 and ready for bid in December or January 2016. Actual bid and construction start date will be determined based on the required sidewalk closures and coordination with the academic calendar.
