Metropolitan at Midtown Wins Tri-State Award

Congratulations to Metropolitan at Midtown and the ColeJenest & Stone team for recognition of outstanding professional achievement from the Tri-State American Society of Landscape Architects. Situated on 16 acres of reclaimed land at the edge of Uptown Charlotte, and bordered by some of the City’s oldest and most historic neighborhoods, this multi-level, mixed-use development transformed the abandoned Charlottetown Mall into a creative and vibrant urban marketplace. A model of successful public/private partnership, Metropolitan at Midtown proved to be a catalyst for further revitalization of surrounding neighborhoods.

The design organizes and connects eight multi-level buildings along pedestrian-friendly streets, with landscaped parks, public plazas and water features. Capped for 30 years, Little Sugar Creek was daylighted as part of the project, allowing the development of a greenway system that is integral to the pedestrian connectivity to the surrounding neighborhoods and uses. Close coordination with Mecklenburg County resulted in a seamless transition between Midtown and the greenway project. Additional collaboration with the City of Charlotte led to roadway improvements including a new bridge over the creek, on-street parking, bus stops, custom bus shelters, sidewalks and planting strips.

The Tri-State is comprised of the North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia chapters of ASLA. Metropolitan at Midtown was a joint development of Pappas Properties, Collet & Associates and Colonial Properties Trust.
